Louise Doran, the 9th child, 5th daughter, of David Daniel and Sarah Jane Pickard Doran was born on August 29, 1909 in DuBois, PA, perhaps at 112 1/2 Evergreen St. She was baptized September 15th and her godparents were Peter Allen and Catherine Rian. In the 1915? Doran family picture, Louise is fourth from the right; in the 1917? Doran family photograph she is seated to the left of her father.
Louise was the only Doran to have any drawing ability; Bill said her charcoal sketches showed considerable talent. She also had a nice singing voice. In her photograph album, Louise seems to be a bright, lively young girl surrounded by family and friends, both male and female. One older woman, Mrs. Evelyn Bates (a teacher, perhaps?) was extremely fond of Louise, even offering to take her to Europe. But Louise's mother, Sarah, firmly said "no" to that idea. Louise did not finish High School but went to work for the Telephone Company after probably attending St. Paul's Cathedral School.
Louise was only 19 when she died in Braddock General Hospital, Pgh, (11 am) of peritonitis following a ruptured appendix. As Louise was dying it was said that she saw her grandfather,William Thomas Pickard (who had died the year before) in the room coming to get her. Shebegan singing one of his favorite tunes "The Roses of Picardy." She was the first of the adultDoran children to die and her mother, Sarah, was inconsolable. There was a clerk in a Pittsburgh department store who so resembled Louise, Sarah kept going back to the store to gaze at her.Soon the Doran girls had to explain the situation to the employee. Louise Doran is buried in herparents' plot in Pittsburgh's Mt. Carmel Cemetery.
I also thought I heard that Louise died on the day she was to be married, but her older sister Mary who knew the boyfriend, Clair (Slim) Stanton, had not heard that tale. Bill remembers that her death occured on his 12th birthday, and he was unable to attend the really big football gamethat day.
