DAVID DANIEL DORAN, JR. (8/30/1908 DuBois, PA - 2/28/1930 Pittsburgh, PA) notes by Nancy J. Halli, 2/1999
David Doran, the 8th child, 4rd son, of David Daniel and Sarah Jane Pickard Doran was born on August 30, 1908 in DuBois, PA, perhaps at 112 1/2 Evergreen St. He was baptized at the nearby St. Catherine's Church September 16th and his godparents were Rose and Hugh Callahan. In the 1915? Doran family picture, David is fifth from the right; in the 1917? Doran familyphotograph David is seated to the right of his father just in front of Gerald, in uniform.
David probably began his schooling in DuBois, but continued his education in Pittsburgh whenthe family moved there c.1916/17. Perhaps he attended St. Paul's Cathedral School as many ofthe Doran children did.
Of the Doran men, Gerald and David were the tallest -- perhaps around 5'10", then came Bill,John, David Sr., and Paul.
David Jr. had a pleasant singing voice. His dad had purchased a very good guitar and banjo for David and Paul to learn to play but the boys showed no musical interest, as his younger brother,Bill recalls.
Bill remembered that David once took him to see a Barnum and Bailey Circus in Squirrel Hill (Pgh).
Dave's girlfriend, Peg McKeever, was forever stopping by the people filled Doran home at 5518 Howe Street, Shadyside. She remained in touch with the Doran family long after young Dave at age 21, at 6:10 am. February 28, 1930 of pneumonia following the anesthetic given forhis peptic ulcer surgery. Antibiotics, such as penicillin, were not clinically available until the1940s. David was the first adult son to die. He is buried in the family plot in Mt. Carmel Cemetery, Pittsburgh, PA.
